My oven will not heat. What is the usual cause?
On a gas oven it is usually the igniter, which weakens over time until it glows but no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve. On an electric oven it is usually the bake element, which often shows a visible blister or break.
A gas oven with a slow start, or one where you smell gas briefly before it lights, is a classic weak igniter. It is a common repair and not an expensive one.
On an electric oven, take the racks out and look at the element across the bottom. A break or a swollen spot is visible to the eye.
If the oven heats but the temperature is wrong, that is usually the sensor or calibration, not the element. On a built-in wall oven, the control board is a possibility and is worth diagnosing carefully before ordering anything, because those boards are expensive.
